On Sept. 21, 2013 Big Shoals State Park and Stephen Foster Folk Culture Center State Park had their own “Coastal Clean-up” along the coast of the Suwannee River that is. BSA Troop #35 from Jacksonville, Florida met with Park Rangers at Big Shoals State Park’s canoe launch for a program about the park and the shoals. As a service project the scouts volunteered to clean-up the “coast” by grabbing trash in and along the banks of the Suwannee from Big Shoals to Stephen Foster. The scouts were able to learn how to portage around the shoals since they are currently moving at a rapid rate. Once at Stephen Foster’s canoe launch, they pulled out their canoes along with bags and bags of trash and camped for the night. Park staff would like to thank the scouts for their hard work and for helping both Big Shoals and Stephen Foster Folk Culture Center State Parks complete their first ever participation in the Coastal Clean-up! We look forward to it becoming an annual event for both parks!
